Biological Activity

Trolox is a vitamin E analogue that has powerful antioxidant properties. Trolox is a scavenger of ROS. Trolox is also a ferroptosis inhibitor. Trolox has shown to protect mammalian cells from oxidative damage. Trolox is effective in preventing myocyte necrosis in cell culture studies and in a canine model of two hours of left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) occlusion followed by four hours of reperfusion. Trolox could prevent oxidative stress-induced apoptosis in thymocytes. Pre- or posttreatment of cells with Trolox reduced H2O2-induced DNA fragmentation to control levels and below.

Cell Experiment
Cell lines HeLa cells
Preparation method HeLa cells were exposed to 40, 80, and 160 µM Trolox, respectively, which were the concentrations found to induce oxidative stress and to decrease cell viability dose dependently, and to Trolox 2.5 µM for comparison. After 14 h exposure, the cells were double-stained with annexin V and propidium iodide, and the relative fluorescence was recorded with a multiplate reader.
