Biological Activity

TBHQ enhanced the DNA-binding activity of Nrf2 in the brain and reduced oxidative brain damage in comparison to vehicle-treated ICH. TBHQ significantly increased the expression of HO-1, Nrf2, and Keap1 proteins in CAL-27 cells. TBHQ treatment reduced microglial activation with concomitant reduction in the release of proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β (IL-1 β). TBHQ increase the nuclear accumulation of Nrf2 and the Nrf2-regulated gene expression, including heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and NAD(P)H. Knocking out Nrf2 in mice abolish the protective effect of TBHQ on the DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. TBHQ (tert-Butylhydroquinone) is also an ERK activator.
