Linezolid (PNU-100766) is an oxazolidinone antibiotic. Linezolid inhibits bacterial protein synthesis prior to chain initiation. Linezolid displays potent antibacterial activity against a variety of multidrug-resistant gram-positive microbes in vitro and in vivo. Linezolid is active against most Gram-positive bacteria that cause disease, including streptococci, vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
