Biological Activity

Allicin has highly potent antimicrobial activity, and inhibits growth of a variety of microorganisms, among them antibiotic-resistant strains.

For the in vitro study, a stock solution of 15 mM for allicin was prepared in DMSO and stored at –20°C. For each experiment, the stock solution of allicin was diluted with DMEM to obtain a series of concentrations (15, 30 and 60 µM). The final DMSO concentration was 0.1% (v/v).
For the in vivo study, allicin was dissolved in normal saline to final concentrations of 0.5, 1, and 2 mg/ml. The dosing volume of allicin was determined based on the body weight of each animal, for example, 0.2 ml for a 20 g mouse.

Allicin can be stored in methanol at -20°C. Allicin is very stable under these conditions; degradation is less than 1% for more than 2 years. Methanol was removed and allicin was dissolved in 0.5% carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) before administering to the mice. Preparations were made every 2 weeks. The half degradation time (DT50) of allicin in 0.5% CMC was 11.35 days at -20°C, according to https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27584700/.
